I have by no means claimed that Japan is an atheist country!

I said that there is <strong>relatively less religious fervor</strong> over there than over here (America). I speak, by the way, from the personal experience of having lived in Japan for a while, as well as from having looked up several studies which indicate that to most Japanese people, religion is not taken quite so seriously. I have seen nobody else citing sources that say otherwise, just people telling me "yes they have religion in Japan" which of course I already knew, and was not what I was saying at all.

Also... I would contest that sex "wasn't that important" in a more religious society, but I'm really not willing to get into a debate about religion & sex at the moment.

The Japanese believe there are gods in everything- the sky, the ocean, trees, animals, etc. To claim that Japan is an atheist country is completely wrong, and mislead.

Please get your facts straight before you say your opinions. I shouldn't have to tell you that it kills any credibility you may have. And I use "may have" quite loosely in your case.

Most of your posts are just ranting posts, and while I support anyone's right to have a blog, I don't support just anyone's right to say what they want to say and act like it's fact.

As for virgins and myself- a person is to save themselves for the right person and choosing to not do so is disgusting. To put such an emphasis on sex borders on obsession. Call me old-school, but sex wasn't that important until we took God out of our lives.

Briliant topic, really.

but I feel the need to stress compromise, it really is that important. I had this girlfriend who was into bondage, I am not a sadist but I remebered my old dorm mate who was into that so I gave him a call. Eventually we came to this agreement where he would play the "bad guy", I would be the "hero", and Suzy would be the "damsel in distress".

I have a particular facination with Japan... Almost bordering on a fetish I suppose. So I would dress up as a ninja, and she would be the lovely miko who was captured by the evil samurai. It was... fun, like being in a play. Although there was a lot more boinking.

It was akward at first, especially with an old friend of mine watching, but eventually I got used to it. Now I don't treat sex as a chore because I am actually having fun, though for me it's more about the role playing then the actual put this in there aspect.

I'm curious--you say Japan has a relatively large Christian population, but um... relative to what, exactly? Almost all of the resources I've pulled up on the subject indicate that only around 1% (or less) of the population of Japan is Christian. The most generous estimate was 12%. That's not really all that high, to me, especially compared to Korea. I will certainly admit that the number is *growing*, but that it is relatively high? Compared to other nations, I wouldn't say it is.

I also wonder what you mean by "more religious" as I believe there is a far higher (and more frightening) level of zeal for religion in America as compared to Japan, where many religious rituals seem to be more of a social act than anything else. I'm well aware of Buddhist and Shinto beliefs, but according to several surveys I have read and from my own personal experience, I've found that among most Japanese people, a strong sense of religion being very important is lacking (of course, there was one very alarming exception, but that was something I actually experienced in <i>America</i>, not Japan!). I probably should have clarified that was what I meant by my original post.

People do occasionally to compliment others with a specific outcome in mind, and not always a sexual one... (I compliment people all the time, and I've gotten some baleful glares from women thinking I'm trying to get in their pants, or at least I hope that's the reason, and not because I complimented them in the wrong way. ) Some people compliment people for legit reasons, but most of the time it's for social reasons. (Much like small talk, witty banter, and other such things.)

I'm never really complimented, but when I am I don't really react to it in any way... but I do tend to react negatively to criticism.

I try to live my life as if everything was truthful, and in some ways it is, but natural doubt does come up from time to time. And I trust my instincts more then anything, but for some people thinking about things logically, and/or rationally helps. but the best advice I can give is: Trust those who are trustworthy, and trust that you are able to figure out who's who.

Japan is hardly non-religious, America is more non-religious than Japan! Japanese society is built on Buddhist, and Shinto beliefs. That, and they also have a (relatively) large Christian population.

I'm an romantic asexual with a preference for the fairer sex, and I like to think of everyone as asexual... and I do get kind of uncomfortable when I am reminded that this is not the case.

I would have sex with a woman, for a few reasons... most of which are deeply personal.

But, I would not want to know of her sex life/history, or wether she was a virgin or not... I prefer to live in denile, it makes me happier.

If pizza is a metaphor for sex, if you have olives on the pizza, is that the same as genital warts?

I felt like the article was intentionally misinterpreting the baseball metaphor, especially about one team winning and the other losing. In that analogy, there is a sense of hierarchically structured value of different experiences, but I have a suspicion that this ranking stems from the fact that a lot of people do experience them in that order--they carry significance for people. This could be seen in a context of adversarial gender goals in sex, but it can also be seen (and often is) as two people using a shared script to assess the present state of their relationship. Of course, I'm not going to object to the idea that different people rank things differently. But I don't think the one team winning and the other losing is something that the baseball analogy is intended to convey, at least in many of its uses.

As for the pizza analogy, there seems to be a strong drive for getting people to not devalue masturbation. I suspect that a big part of this is to get people who masturbate to feel less guilty about it and people who don't masturbate to consider trying it. But the fact is that for a lot of people, they do experience partnered sex as being better than masturbation. In a lot of approaches to challenging social norms, I get the sense that some writers aren't all that interested in actual people's experiences (or general tendencies in people's experiences) that may well play a substantial role in creating those norms. I suppose that it's because it's easier to condemn "society" (as though society were remotely even homogeneous) than to attribute things to tendencies in people's experiences, tendencies in how people reason and form categories. I guess it's because there is a sense that one of these can be changed and one can't.

Yes, it is embarrassing that I use such cliches but oh well...
